There are many different types of milk product on the market today, meaning that there is a range of choice that can sometimes be overwhelming. It can be very confusing to know wherever to buy organic whole milk, fat free milk or while the least expensive carton of UHT milk will suit our purposes just fine.

One of the types of milk that is often considered one of the best is fat free milk, which can contain just 0.2% of the fat of regular milk. One of the reasons for the success of this product is that it has many purported health benefits.

As can be guessed from the name of the product, fat free milk has had a great major of the fat removed by processing in a separator machine. A great proportion of the calcium and other micro nutrients in milk lie in the non-fat part of the product, and therefore a greater percentage of this per milliliter can be beneficial for the health.

It is also worth noting that lactose – which improves the absorption ability of the nutrients in milk, especially calcium – is found in the liquid whey part of the milk rather than in the milk fat.

It should also be noted that there are some fat soluble vitamins in the milk fat, which are taken out by companies removing this part of the milk with their separators. To compensate for this, many dairy manufacturers fortify their milk to replace micro nutrients and vitamins that may have been lost during processing.

There are many benefits to choosing fat free milk over other types available on the supermarket shelves. These include a lower amount of scheduled animal fat being consumed, which can be a positive or negative thing depending on the scientific study that is read. Regardless of this, lower fat does mean a greater amount of calorie control for dieters.

In addition to this, there are some nutrients in the liquid whey part of the milk that will naturally increase in ratio once the fat part of the milk has been removed by separators. In order to make up for the fat-soluble vitamins lost in this process, look for fortified fat free milk for the best of both worlds.
